Working, processing

One week down in the freelance life. Honestly, it feels more like working two jobs than anything else, which is strange, as my brain has gotten used to having just the one job… but I’ll get by.

Eurogamer Expo is looking pretty damn good. There’s a list of games on the site right now, but tomorrow we’ll be updating it with more confirmed stuff – and there are at least a few more that should get added to that list before too long, as well. There’s still the possibility that even more publishers will sign up as well, so stay tuned on that. Not exactly a bad day out (or evening) for a fiver, and it’s going to charity too, sooo… you should go.

The other gig right now is for a small agency here in Brighton, Qube, who have been really cool and good to work with so far. I’m helping them with some community stuff on a game that’s shipping in a couple of months; probably not one you’ve heard of, to be honest. In a couple of weeks when the site that’s at the heart of it launches, I’ll happily link you along so I can engineer the tiniest boost in traffic… for now though I’ll keep quiet. Continue reading

Tropic Blunder: the pics

I know I ‘owe’ you a post about the event, but honestly… I don’t know if I want to talk about it. Suffice to say, many old faces were present, many drinks were drunk (but not that many) and good times were had.

In other words, everything I loved about my job, encapsulated in one evening and one very early morning.

To ensure this isn’t a complete loss for those of you who couldn’t make it though, I’ve made a Flickr set (which incidentally, resides on my newly minted ‘Pro’ account, so you can expect more images to make their way online over time).

Enjoy. Back soon.

What face?

Limited Edition… featuring me

(I almost wrote the subject line ‘Wearing Yellow Spandex’ but I get enough random weird search queries as it is…)

Limited Edition, the new podcast from John ‘Shuttler’ Nicholson, ex-host of TabulaCast, and his partner in crime Matt, has moved on to Episode 2 – and said episode has a brand new voice in the mix, namely me! Yes, after hearing episode one of the show I thought I could help these ‘babes in the wood’ on the subject of comics and superhero-type stuff, so I volunteered my services.

Did I completely take over? Are they regretting ever asking me to appear? Did I vent my spleen on the subject of NCsoft? Even worse, did I spill precious secrets about Issue 13??? Continue reading

Eurogamer Expo: the new gig

EuroSpaffer

The future revealed – well, the short-term future anyway.

Thanks to the contacts of the man in the photo above, and my own (ahem) smooth talking, James Spafford and I will be working part-time for Eurogamer.net for the next six weeks or so, helping to promote and then ultimately run the first ever Eurogamer Expo. Continue reading

This side of the morning

Although of course, it’s afternoon as I write this. (TTBM Points for anyone who can identify the subject title without Google.) Really hard to put things into words today, but I’m a writer, dammit, so I’m going to try my best. Continue reading

Actual status report

So, now I’m a bit more sober – which apparently was all that was keeping me asleep – a word.

I can’t say too much; I don’t want to get myself in unnecessary trouble. However; 12 hours ago (exactly, if my clock’s right) all of NCsoft Europe got ‘the word’ on whether we’d be keeping our jobs, or whether we’d be ‘at risk’ of losing them. I was – am – ‘at risk’, which basically leaves the ball in my court in terms of what I do next with my job. Option A: walk away with redundancy (ie, money). Option B: er, stay for a bit, then walk away. I’m pretty sure right now I’ll be taking Option A. Continue reading

20/09/08: Creative Concepts presents…

The soon-to-be-unemployed Creative Concepts team is very proud to present our swansong event… organised, as usual, with not nearly enough time. Continue reading

What a difference…

… a day makes.

Yesterday I had two things confirmed: my redundancy payment (yay!) and my last day at NCsoft (boo!). What I didn’t have was any immediate work coming in and not much to keep me busy.

Today I got hired for a month-long freelance job, and offered potential consulting work for a to-be-specified period as well. So I know now what I’ll be doing come Monday morning, and it’s not lying around in bed. (I won’t spoil it yet either, but it is games related, it does involve an event… but it’s nothing to do with NCsoft. Puzzle that out.) Continue reading

Saturday night’s alright

Just a quick one here. First things first: man, Judge Dredd does not age well as a film (it’s on TV as I type). Although I still do think the costumes are… kinda good, at times. Screw it, it’s an excuse for a picture of Stallone:

He is the Law.

Wait: did I say the costumes looked… good..?

Second: Saturday’s looking good, unlike that codpiece. We’ve got a couple of potential venues, all in easy walking distance of Brighton station. Also, we’re going to investigate the possibility of an all-nighter at a gaming cafe, which could negate the need for people to get a hotel, assuming you can stay awake… we should know more on that tomorrow. Set the Stage videos

Set the Stage: AionAlmost the last hurrah, this. Below the ‘cut’, if you will, you’ll find two videos that I edited and subtitled (well, except for the actual translation). Both were shot by Jörg ‘Kerensky’ Koonen during the Games Convention in Leipzig.

They’re performances of the winning entries for Set the Stage, the competition that we ran to get players to write scripts for the Aion and Guild Wars characters to perform. (The scripts were reworked by me to become suitable for performance, but these two are quite similar to the original material, with many lines remaining intact. You can download my script drafts for all six final entries at the official Aion and Guild Wars sites.)

The sound quality is not excellent – source was basically the speakers on the stand, which had to compete with everything around – so I’ve embedded the ‘normal’ and English subtitled versions. (There are also French and German versions of each – see below.)

As I said before, these stage performances were probably what I was most proud of achieving during Games Convention. Trust me; there were some obstacles to overcome! However, I personally feel the performances were excellent, given the lack of rehearsal… Continue reading
